OAPES-CM - Advanced Small Satellite Operation

Member groups

The OAPES-CM synergetic activities program is carried out by two research groups of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid: the "Ignacio Da Riva" Institute (IDR), which acts as program coordinator, and the Real-Time Systems and Telematics Services Engineering Group (STRAST).

"Ignacio Da Riva" Microgravity University Institute (IDR)

The program coordinator is the satellite development group of the University Institute of Microgravity "Ignacio Da Riva" (IDR) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The IDR is a center oriented towards research, development and training activities in the areas of aerospace sciences and technologies.

The group has developed a wide experience in aerospace research. One of its first milestones was the launch of the UPMSat-1 microsatellite in 1995. More recently, the group has developed the UPMSat-2 satellite, launched on September 3, 2020 and currently in operation.

The main research lines of space research have been consolidated in satellite thermal control, structural analysis of space structures, attitude control, and the design, construction and operation of small satellites and payloads and scientific instruments for ESA missions.

Real-Time Systems and Telematic Services Architecture Group

The Real-Time Systems and Telematic Services Architecture Group of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (STRAST) is integrated in the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

The group research is oriented to software development technologies for real-time systems and telematic services. Its activity in the aerospace domain lies in the area of real-time embedded systems and high integrity systems.

The STRAST group has designed, developed and validated the on-board software for the UPMSat-2 microsatellite, as well as the mission ground station software. It has also been involved in the specification of the on-board computer and in the development of the System On-Chip (SoC) on which it is based. All the software has been developed with tools resulting from the group research.
